Polo Timeless Film Festival

Polo Timeless Film Festival

Volkswagen is, quite rightly, making a splash about the new Polo. With the first cars hitting showrooms this Friday, it has launched the Polo Timeless Film Festival. Why timeless? The company is promoting the car as a timeless piece of design.

With a trip to New York up for grabs, all you have to do to take part in the Polo Timeless Film Festival is to vote for your favourite movie. There are 10 films from which to make a choice:

  • Top Gun
  • Grease
  • Love Actually
  • Pride and Prejudice
  • Atonement
  • The Devil Wears Prada
  • 50 first Dates
  • Mamma Mia
  • Bridget Jones
  • Sex and the City

The winning film will then be screened free on allocated big screens around the country on either Thursday 29 October or Tuesday 3 October.

Online entry for the New York competition closes on 25 October 2009, with the draw taking place on 6 November. Personally, we’d vote for the period-defining Top Gun from the 1980s. But then again, Grease is one of our favourites… (We also haven’t seen half of the others.)

New Polo: PoloDriver first drives report

2009 Volkswagen Polo 1.4 SEL DSG

Here, as promised, is our first drive report from last week’s new Polo press launch. Is it a really a shrunken Golf? Does it enjoy the premium feel of all its predecessors, is it the little limousine Volkswagen would have you believe, and how striking is the new car in the metal?

Last week we had initial drives of the 1.2 Moda, 1.2 SE, 1.4 SE, 1.6 SE TDI and 1.4 SEL DSG. To find out the answers to the questions above and what we think of the fifth-generation Polo, click on the magazine graphic below, or if you can’t see the preview, visit this link.

2009 Polo: three-door prices

2009 Volkswagen Polo three-door

The new Polo family is complete, for now at least. Just as the first five-door models are delivered to customers, the sportier-looking three-door version has become available to order. The cheapest new Polo is now the three-door 1.2 59bhp S at £9435, while the most expensive is the 1.6 TDI 89bhp SEL at £14,310.

The same trim levels and engine options as the family-frendly five-door are available. Moving up from the base-level S, buyers can choose from Moda, SE and SEL, with air-conditioning-equipped S A/C and Moda A/C cars in-between. Engine choice is wide, with 59 and 69bhp 1.2 and 84bhp 1.4 petrols, and 74 and 89bhp diesel units.

If ordered now, delivery of three-door Polos is scheduled for January 2010. For more information on the new Polo click here; the full PDF price list which includes specification and option pricing can be downloaded from this link.

2009 Polo: 1.4 SEL DSG tested by Autocar

2009 Volkswagen Polo 1.4 SEL

Fresh from the UK press launch in the week, UK motoring weekly Autocar has published an online first drive of one of our favourite new Polo models, the 1.4 DSG. Tested in top SEL form, the magazine was impressed by the technology of the seven-speed, double-clutch gearbox and the mature, quality feel of the latest version of Volkswagen’s premium supermini. Read the full first drive here.

2009 Polo: ‘Cool’ TV commercial

After the contemporary ‘Neon‘ Pink-soundtracked and ‘Ready for a new class‘ new Polo commercials comes this retro-styled one. You have to ask if anyone in Volkswagen’s marketing department had watched Grease the weekend before the campaign meeting?

(Thanks to German Car Scene.)
