2010 Polo GTI: exclusive digital market launch on Facebook

The new Polo GTI is to be Volkswagen’s first product launched digitally on the internet. Presented exclusively to customers in Europe via social networking site Facebook, users are alerted to the sporty new VW by the slogan, ‘Fast Lane – Driven by Fun.’ The company claims that the new exclusively digital campaign is not car advertising in the classic sense, but that it ‘specifically harnesses the diverse opportunities offered by social networks to inspire young drivers for the Polo GTI.’

Speaking about the launch of the English-language ‘Volkswagen International’ Facebook page, Luca de Meo, Director of Marketing, Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brand, said: ‘Our aim is to inspire young people for Volkswagen brand products – in an international dimension. This campaign gets us close to customers and at the same time gives us the opportunity to engage in an intensive dialog with them.’

In typical, subtle Volkswagen fashion, three videos where the new Polo GTI is not immediately in evidence have been produced for the channel at www.facebook.com/volkswagen. The clips depict clever scenes that add an unusual touch to everyday life; a giant slide appears at subway steps, supermarket carts that are particularly agile, and an elevator that sounds like a rocket taking off. The films aim to convey the thrill of speed without encouraging fast driving.

Volkswagen’s social networking profile also includes the most important product information about the new Polo GTI as well as links to the company’s other global Facebook activities. A ‘Fast Wall’ has been added for member messages, and there are photographs of the Polo GTI itself. In addition, a competition – where a new Polo GTI is the prize – motivates users to be creative and submit their own ‘Fast Lane’ contributions.

Auto Express publishes 2010 Polo GTI vs SEAT Ibiza Bocanegra twin test

The latest issue of UK car news weekly Auto Express goes one better than its recent 2010 Polo GTI first drive by pitting VW’s latest performance newcomer against the SEAT Ibiza Bocanegra. Possibly the hot Polo’s most obvious rival, its Spanish rival packs the same 178bhp punch, provided by the same 1.4-litre TSI engine and coupled to the same seven-speed, paddle-operated DSG gearbox. Unsurprisingly, both sprint from 0 to 62mph in 6.9 seconds, but the Ibiza is only £17,245 compared to the Polo’s basic price of £18,275. Which car wins? 2010 Polo GTI: South Wales first drive over at PistonHeads

It turns out that Volkswagen UK have brought over three left-hand drive Polo GTIs hot from the car’s launch in Germany to this green and pleasant land. UK performance car website PistonHeads.com has tested a white example in the roads above Crickhowell in South Wales, seemingly the same playground as where Autocar conducted the first UK drive of the new car a couple of weeks ago with a red model. But, encouragingly, the latest incarnation of the hot shot Polo was more to PistonHeads’ liking: ‘The Polo GTI kind of resurrects the chuckable-but-solid spirit of the old Mk2 Golf GTI. 2010 Polo GTI: evo magazine first drive review now online

Hot on the tracks of UK motoring weeklies Auto Express and Autocar, monthly performance car title evo has now published an online review of the new Polo GTI on its website. The respected journos at evo seem to like it, too, calling the new twin-charged Polo ‘a surprisingly old school GTI’, before summing up with, ‘Here is the best attempt yet at a convincing GTI-badged Polo, a car with its own personality freed from the shadow of the Golf.’ At last! The only fly in the ointment appears to be the DSG-only specification. But, the magazine hints that a six-speed manual version could eventually be on the cards. 2010 Polo GTI: now available to order in the UK; first deliveries due in July

Numerous sources state that the 2010 Polo GTI is now available to order in the UK, and the appearance of the model on the configurator pages of Volkswagen UK’s website bear this out. With first deliveries said to be in July (a month earlier than originally thought), currently there’s no optional alcantara/leather trim, alternative alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights or panoramic sunroof, all seen on the press demonstrators currently doing the rounds in Germany. All but the more powerful headlights aren’t mentioned in the early brochures we have either, suggesting that final specifications for the UK and Europe will follow. We do definitely know the prices, though; the 2010 Polo GTI will cost £18,275 for the three-door and £18,875 for the five-door car.

Edit, 27 May 2010: the following options are now listed on Volkswagen UK’s configurator – leather multi-function steering wheel at £110, electric glass sunroof £760 (though this is not clear as to whether it’s part of a panoramic module; it would appear so from the illustration), and bi-xenon headlights incorporating the LED daytime running lights at £720.
